Our Strengths in Precision Health

At Leeuwenhoek Laboratories, we believe that true precision health starts from the gut. By decoding the biochemical signals produced by gut microbiota, we aim to help individuals understand their physiological state, potential disease risks, and personalized intervention strategies—well before symptoms appear. Unlike traditional health checkups that provide only static snapshots, our approach focuses on real-time molecular changes, offering a new level of insight into your body’s dynamic balance. This enables earlier detection, personalized prevention, and more informed health decisions. Our precision health platform is built on high-resolution mass spectrometry, enabling rapid, high-throughput, and sensitive analysis of microbial metabolites. Through the development of gut microbiota–associated metabolomics, we offer targeted small-molecule profiling to assess early signs of disease—making us one of the few teams in Taiwan to provide such next-generation diagnostic tools.

We further expand our capabilities through four specialized laboratories. The Metabolomics and Precision Health Laboratory develops disease risk prediction platforms based on microbial metabolite signatures. The Next-Generation Probiotics Laboratory focuses on isolating promising local strains with health-promoting potential. The Bacterial Therapy Laboratory integrates in vitro and germ-free mouse models to validate the efficacy of novel strains beyond typical supplements. Lastly, the Research and Product Development Laboratory translates these discoveries into functional health solutions by combining beneficial strains with patented ingredients. By integrating scientific expertise, advanced analytics, and clinical relevance, Leeuwenhoek is bridging the gap between microbiome science and personal well-being—delivering actionable insights, personalized recommendations, and preventive strategies that redefine modern healthcare.

The Importance of Gut Microbial Metabolites in Human Health

The gut is a major immune and metabolic organ, home to trillions of bacteria that influence health far beyond digestion. Recent studies have shown that not only the composition of gut microbiota, but also their metabolites, play vital roles in regulating human physiology. Metabolomics—the study of small-molecule metabolites—offers a real-time and functional reflection of the body's health status. Because metabolic changes often occur downstream of genetic or protein-level alterations, metabolomics provides a more direct and dynamic view of physiological and pathological processes.

Gut microbes transform dietary components into bioactive compounds. For instance, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) derived from fiber fermentation can stimulate the secretion of GLP-1 and PYY, helping regulate blood sugar and appetite. On the other hand, microbial metabolism of phosphatidylcholine and L-carnitine leads to the production of TMAO, a molecule linked to cardiovascular risk. Some strains like Akkermansia muciniphila also enhance gut barrier function and insulin sensitivity. By supporting beneficial bacteria and their metabolites, we can positively modulate health and lower the risk of metabolic diseases. At Leeuwenhoek Biotech, we translate these insights into precision tools that empower better health through the gut.
